    Location 5.4 /10

Situated in one of the most sought-after residential districts of the city, the 16th, between metro Victor Hugo (line 2) and Trocadéro (lines 6 and 9), both a five minute walk away, it is very easy to get around Paris. Here you are never far from a major Parisian monument - be it the Trocadero, the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe...also a short walk away from the Champs Elysées, the Garden Elysée is a good choice if you are on business or if you are a very big fan of the Champs Elysées and the life that surrounds it. The area the hotel finds itself is very quiet and residential so if you are looking to step out of your hotel and stumble into Parisian nightlife action, this is not the place to be. The Garden Elysee is more suitable for a clientele that has already visited Paris and who feels comfortable in a quiet zone of the city. Other hotels of the same chain is the 'Floride Etoile' (to the left of the Garden Elysee), 'Le A' and 'A la Villa des Artistes'.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The rooms are spacious, clean, modern, bright and airy. The décor is simple and contemporary, white walls, splashes of purple and orange. There are fresh potted orchids in the bathrooms, giving them a little more life. The room shave large windows (which can be opened) letting in plenty of sunlight. Rooms have a view either onto the green entrance or on the breakfast garden - none have street views. All rooms have flat-screen televisions, hair dryer, telephone, safe, mini-bar and various television channels including BBC World and CNN, as well as Spanish, Italian, Russian and German channels. The room temperature is adjusted individually by the guests, as they please. Towels, bathrobe and slippers are provided. The rooms are extremely comfortable. The smallest room is 14m² and the largest, 30m². There are 10 rooms accommodated for a third person, equipped with a very comfortable sofa bed. Room service is available from 12pm-2.30am. The room tariffs vary depending on the season, but expect to pay 120 Euros (£104) in the winter/150 Euros (£129) in the summer for a standard double room.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The hotel is just off a quiet street and a lovely green, peaceful and tranquil entrance greets its guests. The entrance consists in a small car park too. Climbers run along the hotel walls. This contemporary recently-renovated hotel (2008) has a total of 46 rooms. The lobby is fresh, clean, modern and spacious. It feels a little like an airport lounge due to its size. Chimneys, white orchids and low lighting and warm orange and purple tones have been used to make the atmosphere a little more cosy. There are large windows through which the green plants are visible, which is very soothing. The lobby wraps around the building, through the bar area (serves from 12pm-1am) to the conservatory, garden terrace and breakfast room. There is a wide choice of areas to sit in and read or have a meeting and you are never far from a view onto vegetation. The garden, although small, is very pleasant in the summer. The hotel has a baggage handling service when guests arrive at the hotel. A wide range of newspapers and magazines are available such as The Figaro, the International Herald Tribune, the Guardian, El Pais and Les Echoes. Overall a very safe bet, with simple, spacious, comfortable and contemporary rooms. The service is great and here you are guaranteed peace and quiet. The hotel also has a couple of rooms for smokers so do enquire at reservations.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotel serves a buffet breakfast and is not equipped for lunch and dinner. The guest has the choice between a hot breakfast, continental and buffet. The buffet breakfast caters for most tastes. There is all sorts ? from the typically French Pain au chocolat and croissants to fresh fruit, juices, cereals, hams and cheeses, a variety of breads and hot breakfast too (bacon and eggs). The 'viennoiseries', or baked goods, are ordered from well-known French caterer, Le Nôtre and the tea is my favourite: 'Mariage Frère' - makes for a truly excellent tasty cup of tea with myriad flavours to choose from. The breakfast is nicely organised and a big effort has been made to make it a pleasant breakfast area. A continental breakfast will cost you 16 Euros and the buffet 22 Euros. Breakfast is served between 7am-10.30am. The hotel does not serve lunch or dinner, so be prepared to eat in the surrounding establishments which can be fairly dear. Otherwise the hotel does have an agreement with nearby trendy Sushi bar, Planet Sushi which you can order via room service. There are also soups, sandwiches and salads available to order.

    To know

If you are arriving by car or plan on renting a car, it is possible to use the hotel car park for 26 Euros per day (£22); bookings must be made in advance. The staff all speak English and a third language. They are extremely friendly and helpful and really go out of their way to help guests. They also like to have a bit of a joke with the clientele. The hotel's clientele is very diverse and ranges from families to couples to business mainly from Europe, the US and Russia. There is free WIFI access throughout the hotel and guests also have access to a computer in the lobby. The forte of the hotel is the low staff turnover. For example, Martha knows her clients every like and dislike, which is highly valued by the guests hence the high numbers of returners. The Garden Elysée is owned by the same proprietor as the Floride Etoile to the left of the Garden Elysee entrance and both hotels are run entirely by a female management team; perhaps the fresh orchids in the rooms is their way of manifesting their female touch! Do ask for a room that is not in close proximity to the lift shafts as these can be a little noisy. Check-in 2pm/check-out 12pm.

Well-located close to the Champs Elysées, the Floride Etoile lies in a back street away from the hubbub of the capital. The hotel is basic and clean. It could do with a little spruce up. The staff is very friendly and willing. Guests can also use some of the facilities at sister hotel next door, the Garden Elysée. Ideal for families due to the connecting rooms on the ground floor.

The recently renovated Renaissance Parc Trocadéro is strategically located in the classy West end of Paris ? making it a perfect base camp both for those wishing to explore the numerous museums and attractions in the area and for those visiting France's capital on business. What's more, the hotel is fully deserving of its privileged address: mixing classic elegance with contemporary design, The Renaissance feels grand without being pretentious. Rooms spread over four buildings surround the calm inner courtyard, providing a green, fresh space away from the street from which to relax following a heavy day's sightseeing.

Don't expect to be bowled over by the Waldorf Trocadéro. Despite the friendly welcome and good service in the rooms, there is neither a spa nor a restaurant. Basically, while the establishment is perfectly acceptable, it is unlikely to be a lasting memory.

This boutique hotel with 45 rooms owes a lot of its class to the design work of Fréderic Méchiche. Though classical in many ways, its elegant use of vertical black and white stripes is reminiscent of the world of haute-couture, thus creating a clever mix of styles. Discrete and delicate.

Discretion and a very British sense of style are the order of the day at this hotel. Lovers of fine food and wine will be in seventh heaven dining on the creations of the Michelin chef famed for his macaroons, whilst those who are used to luxury accommodation will appreciate the refined details, plush ambience and professional reserve of the staff here. If you like very well-lit surroundings, however, this is probably not the place for you!

The Bristol is one of the few luxury hotels in Paris that belongs to a European family (German) rather than one of the great families of Asia or the United Arab Emirates. Stylish, classy and refined, the Bristol holds great importance in the quality and authenticity of its features and materials. Its gourmet restaurant attracts a demanding clientele that is fond of excellent cuisine.

The George V is one of the most prestigious Parisian palaces in the city. You barely have to cross the threshold before realising you are entering a hotel in which luxury, perfection and indulgence are the name of the game. Boasting rooms fit for a princess, impressive lounges and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the George V ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying even the most demanding of guests. The interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon oversaw the complete refurbishment of the building in 1997, and has since then continued to make improvements to the decor in the 18th Century style.

The latest Parisian luxury hotel, the Shangri-La will seduce a demanding clientele that will know how to appreciate the richly ornate Empire style of this particular hotel. Nothing more can be said about the lengths taken to find the materials, designs, and other accessories that contribute to recreating the atmosphere of the 19th century, while at the same time offering the comfort and modernity of the 21st century. This extremely shiny and ornate Empire style may scare away some potential guests, however, it is still a real privilege to stay in this residence previously owned by a prince, the great nephew of Napoleon.

Inaugurated on 28 February 2012, the W Paris - Opera has finally opened in the City of Light. The Starwood brand linked to fashion and trends thus has its own prestigious establishment in Paris.
Nestled in a 19th century building, the hotel is in a great location. Design and modernity, with a conceptual touch, all come together here. Its designer is in the best position to explain why, since we're not sure it's really clear otherwise, but the W Paris-Opera is centred around the theme The Spark. The establishment thus defines itself as a "spark", creating a fictitious connection between the very first W hotel in New York and its newest sibling in Paris.

At the heart of the Opera district, the W can already rely on its guests who are fans of the brand and hopes that word of mouth will make it the place to be in the area; not just for its rooms but for its restaurant and bar as well.
