Another boutique design from the people who brought you Le Chat Noir and Le Color hotels, the Standard is just as successful in its own way. Unlike the other two, however, this hotel's style may not be to everyone's taste, being a touch more off-beat than its cousins. Well-located, innovatively appointed and daring, it offers a breath of fresh air from the busy Parisian streets. The Standard is the perfect base for a short stay in the French capital and comes with the easyvoyage.co.uk seal of approval!

    Location 5.96 /10

On a quiet road just off the famous rue de la Roquette, between Bastille and the Boulevard Voltaire, the Standard finds itself in the privileged position right in the heart of one of the trendiest, artsy quarters of Paris. Within a few minutes' walk you'll find the new Opéra, Place des Vosges and the Port de l'Arsenal (leading to the Seine), which makes for a lovely stroll at any time of the day. A little further afield is another ever-cool area, the Marais, and to the east is the Cimetière du Père Lachaise, which is the final resting place of many a big name. The capital's two main islands and the Jardin des Plantes are also reachable. Public transport will get you efficiently to the rest of Paris' attractions across town.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

All rooms at the Standard feature three colours. It will come as no surprise that two of those are black and white; green, fuscia or orange will complement this pair in the form of curtains and a vase depending on your choice of room. That these curtains diffuse a coloured light onto the walls had not been envisaged upon the conception of the rooms. As at Le Chat Noir, the rooms are nicely, but barely appointed. A simple white shelf supports a vase and beneath is a deep seated white stool. Only a flatscreen television, a Tamtam stool and a small bedside table complete the lineup of furniture. The simple, bright white bathrooms boast large, glass-door showers with two heads and bathrobes come as standard (unusual in Paris) as do toiletries and hairdryer. The lines are as clean as the shining tiles. One room has a bathtub whose exterior does a great impression of a giant barcode.

    Overview 7.95 /10

You won't miss the hotel on rue des Taillandiers as it is one of the very few fronts painted black. However if this doesn't catch your attention then the novelty-sized coloured oblong candles in the window will certainly make you look twice. The great smelling lobby's centre piece is without doubt the large round white-feathered lamp hovering over seating area. Below, against the far side of the hall and just in front of the window exposing the candles, is a high bench upholstered in barcode cloth, above which are more pink candles and a row of white orchids which stand out against the black-painted wall. White perspex tables are surrounded by black and white pouffes and are all placed on the only other item aside from the candles to depart from the black and white theme; the thick rug featuring, yes, a black background with white spots, but also green and pink lettering. In fact the rug was delivered right in the middle of our visit! The lift and stairs can be found just beyond the lobby and a computer free for guests' use is situated just to the left of the entrance. On the floor below reception is a room which can be used as either a lounge or a meeting space. The room is split down the middle with each side featuring a collection of semi-circular white leather pads adorning the walls which act as a soft back to the black pouffes posed underneath them. Everything else in the room remains faithful to the colour scheme save some of the same pink candles from the lobby on similar white tables. On the ceiling hang more of the outrageous plumed lampshades as seen upstairs, this time cylindrical in shape. At one end of the room is a small bar (barcoded front) serving tea, coffee and a few alcoholic drinks.

    Food and drink 6.95 /10

The breakfast room, bathed in light, is strange in that it is found at the top of the hotel, in a room boasting beams and wooden roof supports. Along the walls are pictures of the highly original cups and saucers (the latter being accentuated so as to include a plate too) against a backdrop of either one of the hotel rooms' colour themes. The continental breakfast is taken at black tables on which the white porcelain is complemented with black serviettes. The seats are again upholstered in black and white striped material. The hotel does not serve lunch or dinner.

    To know

Part of the Relais de Paris hotel group (see also Le Chat Noir and the Color Design), the Standard was partly created by young designers who have left their mark throughout the hotel, most notably with a trademark barcode theme which graces the rooms as well as the public areas of the hotel. Only a few minutes' stroll away, on Thursday and Sunday mornings and early afternoons, one of Paris' most animated markets materialises along the Boulevard Richard Lenoir. It is here that the very best of the capital's food merchants gather to peddle their produce to locals and intrigued tourists alike. For something more practical to take back home you'll come across stalls selling all kinds of handmade goods, jewellery and some clothing.

A medium-sized hotel near the lively back streets and nightlife of the Bastille and Oberkampf districts. The hotel's simple decor and friendly welcome ensure a cosy and comfortable stay, but apart from the modern bathrooms, the place is a bit old-fashioned.

The Bristol is one of the few luxury hotels in Paris that belongs to a European family (German) rather than one of the great families of Asia or the United Arab Emirates. Stylish, classy and refined, the Bristol holds great importance in the quality and authenticity of its features and materials. Its gourmet restaurant attracts a demanding clientele that is fond of excellent cuisine.

The George V is one of the most prestigious Parisian palaces in the city. You barely have to cross the threshold before realising you are entering a hotel in which luxury, perfection and indulgence are the name of the game. Boasting rooms fit for a princess, impressive lounges and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the George V ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying even the most demanding of guests. The interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon oversaw the complete refurbishment of the building in 1997, and has since then continued to make improvements to the decor in the 18th Century style.

The latest Parisian luxury hotel, the Shangri-La will seduce a demanding clientele that will know how to appreciate the richly ornate Empire style of this particular hotel. Nothing more can be said about the lengths taken to find the materials, designs, and other accessories that contribute to recreating the atmosphere of the 19th century, while at the same time offering the comfort and modernity of the 21st century. This extremely shiny and ornate Empire style may scare away some potential guests, however, it is still a real privilege to stay in this residence previously owned by a prince, the great nephew of Napoleon.

Inaugurated on 28 February 2012, the W Paris - Opera has finally opened in the City of Light. The Starwood brand linked to fashion and trends thus has its own prestigious establishment in Paris.
Nestled in a 19th century building, the hotel is in a great location. Design and modernity, with a conceptual touch, all come together here. Its designer is in the best position to explain why, since we're not sure it's really clear otherwise, but the W Paris-Opera is centred around the theme The Spark. The establishment thus defines itself as a "spark", creating a fictitious connection between the very first W hotel in New York and its newest sibling in Paris.

At the heart of the Opera district, the W can already rely on its guests who are fans of the brand and hopes that word of mouth will make it the place to be in the area; not just for its rooms but for its restaurant and bar as well.
