    Location 8.16 /10

The Normandy Hotel enjoys a perfect location: its stands on the corners of the Rue de l'Echelle and the Rue Saint-Honoré, providing a good starting point to visit the Jardins de Tuileries, the Royal Palace, the Louvre, the Comédie Française - one of the best known theatres of the capital, and the Opéra Garnier - a temple for melodrama enthusiasts. The main Parisian sights are all close by along the banks of the Seine, a short walking distance from the hotel. All sorts of public transport is close at hand to take you wherever you want to go in Paris. Nearby, the Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre metro station is on lines 1 and 7, and a little further on, in the Avenue de l'Opéra, line 14 will take you to the Pyramides station. You may, of course, prefer to travel by bus. As for the airports, the fastest way to get to Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle is the shuttle service that leaves from the Opéra station; for Orly airport, you can take the Air France shuttle that leaves from the Invalides station.

    Accommodation 6.45 /10

The hotel has 117 rooms spread out over 6 storeys and they're all very spacious. Even in the standard category (which is the case of half of the rooms), the minimum area is between 18 and 20 m², which is quite remarkable for Paris, where standard rooms are generally much smaller. The superior rooms (the other half) boast an additional 12m². The Normandy also has 4 suites. However, it should be added that the quaint look of the rooms will not be to the liking of everyone, especially younger guests used to a different style. The Art Déco furniture has not undergone any form of upgrades or renovations. The rooms seem to be frozen in 1877, at a time when the interior was probably considered incredibly modern. Nowadays however, the Art Déco furniture, made of dark or white wood, and the use of out of fashion autumnal colours, make them look more like the strange setting of a theme party than a modern hotel. The bathrooms are no exception, where the overall effect is even more dismal, and with the same feeling of being stuck in the past. One thing that leaves nothing to be desired, however, is the cleanliness! The windows (2 in each room) look out onto the courtyard or the street, which is quiet at night, and let in plenty of natural daylight. As far as noise is concerned, the ground and 1st floor rooms are soundproofed; after that, you just have to hope that the noise level dies out as you move up the building.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Opened in 1877, the 4 star establishment's new owner bought it in 2000 but it has never been completely renovated. In 2007 work was focused on the common areas, which have nevertheless retained their vaguely Art Déco style. The Normandy Hotel seems to have escaped all of the modern trends that lean towards standardisation and the reduction of large areas into small units, and is proud of its particularly vast rooms. In the long corridors in the hallway, with their flowery wall-to-wall carpeting and autumnal colours, we were struck by the height of the ceilings, which makes them strangely majestic. As in the rest of the hotel, the bar has retained its original look, one of a 100 year old establishment where you'd half expect to see a distinguished lord puffing away at a cigar. It's open from 11:00am till midnight, or 1:00am depending on the crowds: it serves light snacks at lunch and is a place where you can enjoy a drink in a resolutely quaint and British atmosphere. The green wall-to-wall carpeting, the black leather armchairs, and the dark wood walls will take you back to a very distant past. In winter, the fireplace at the end of the sitting room is lit, a feature no longer to be found anywhere else in Paris. It serves as a witness of the romanticism that was once found in the bygone days of Parisian hotels.

    Food and drink

Instead of a restaurant, the Normandy Hotel has a bar, open from 11:00am till midnight or 1:00am. For lunch it serves French cuisine and sandwiches, and there is room service from 6:00pm till 2:00am. Breakfast is served from 7:00am till 10:30am (or till 11:00am at the weekend) in a fantastic setting completely in tune with the quaint charm of the hotel: an enormous room with a very high ceiling (the original no less, which was uncovered 2 years ago when the communal areas were being renovated), refined curtains, tall columns, and huge lampposts that create a decor that would provide a venue better suited to a gala dinner than a breakfast buffet.

    To know

The Normandy Hotel was originally designed for a refined English clientèle staying in Paris, a fact that is still seen in the slightly British style of the establishment. Nowadays the hotel is popular among Japanese, Russian, Italian, and Spanish guests. However, it has its regulars, some of whom have been coming for the past 25 years. We recommend it to adult couples who are quite fond of an old fashioned setting. In winter, once a month, the small white piano in the entrance hall next to the bar comes back to life and concerts liven up the evenings.

This is a magnificent and prestigious 4-star hotel in which Second Empire decor prevails, although a few of the rooms are a bit more modern. It offers excellent services, and oozes class and refinement. It is also home to a fine brasserie with a mouth-watering menu created by a famous chef, and a bar that offers a particularly intimate and cosy setting.

One of our firm favourites, the Régina luxury hotel wins hands down for style and character. In a superb location, it sits between the Louvre and the Jardins des Tuileries. The Régina exudes Art Nouveau charm like no other hotel in Paris taking the guests back in time to the early 1900s. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is surprisingly unpretentious and relaxed. Guests should not be surprised to run into film crews or Chanel convoys headed by Mr Lagerfeld himself!

The Bristol is one of the few luxury hotels in Paris that belongs to a European family (German) rather than one of the great families of Asia or the United Arab Emirates. Stylish, classy and refined, the Bristol holds great importance in the quality and authenticity of its features and materials. Its gourmet restaurant attracts a demanding clientele that is fond of excellent cuisine.

The George V is one of the most prestigious Parisian palaces in the city. You barely have to cross the threshold before realising you are entering a hotel in which luxury, perfection and indulgence are the name of the game. Boasting rooms fit for a princess, impressive lounges and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the George V ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying even the most demanding of guests. The interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon oversaw the complete refurbishment of the building in 1997, and has since then continued to make improvements to the decor in the 18th Century style.

The latest Parisian luxury hotel, the Shangri-La will seduce a demanding clientele that will know how to appreciate the richly ornate Empire style of this particular hotel. Nothing more can be said about the lengths taken to find the materials, designs, and other accessories that contribute to recreating the atmosphere of the 19th century, while at the same time offering the comfort and modernity of the 21st century. This extremely shiny and ornate Empire style may scare away some potential guests, however, it is still a real privilege to stay in this residence previously owned by a prince, the great nephew of Napoleon.

Inaugurated on 28 February 2012, the W Paris - Opera has finally opened in the City of Light. The Starwood brand linked to fashion and trends thus has its own prestigious establishment in Paris.
Nestled in a 19th century building, the hotel is in a great location. Design and modernity, with a conceptual touch, all come together here. Its designer is in the best position to explain why, since we're not sure it's really clear otherwise, but the W Paris-Opera is centred around the theme The Spark. The establishment thus defines itself as a "spark", creating a fictitious connection between the very first W hotel in New York and its newest sibling in Paris.

At the heart of the Opera district, the W can already rely on its guests who are fans of the brand and hopes that word of mouth will make it the place to be in the area; not just for its rooms but for its restaurant and bar as well.
