Inaugurated on 28 February 2012, the W Paris - Opera has finally opened in the City of Light. The Starwood brand linked to fashion and trends thus has its own prestigious establishment in Paris.
Nestled in a 19th century building, the hotel is in a great location. Design and modernity, with a conceptual touch, all come together here. Its designer is in the best position to explain why, since we're not sure it's really clear otherwise, but the W Paris-Opera is centred around the theme The Spark. The establishment thus defines itself as a "spark", creating a fictitious connection between the very first W hotel in New York and its newest sibling in Paris.

At the heart of the Opera district, the W can already rely on its guests who are fans of the brand and hopes that word of mouth will make it the place to be in the area; not just for its rooms but for its restaurant and bar as well.

    Location 8.85 /10

Standing at 4 Meyerbeer Street, between Opera Garnier and Galeries Lafayette, the hotel has a very central location. It takes about 5 minutes on foot to reach Place Vendôme and 10 minutes for the Louvre and the Tuileries gardens. The Musée d'Orsay and the Champs Elysées are also not very far away.

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

5 storeys with a total of 91 guest rooms, including two Extreme WOW suites, make up this hotel. There are two details that really stand out in the first 3 categories of rooms: a high ceiling and the pleasant size, especially for Paris.

Next you will notice the design and the atmosphere of the surroundings: a bed designed especially for the brand, a decor with modern lines and an open bathroom, which all vary in size.
The only damper is the view: while the 'spectacular' rooms look out onto the dome of the Opera, the others simply look out onto other buildings. It's typical but not exactly ideal.

You might also be disappointed with the EW suite. There's no question regarding its generous size, not to mention its mouldings and high ceilings, but we were a little surprised by the large circular bed. It may be standing in the middle of a room with rounded shapes, but it still seems out of place. Gilded and quilted, a sort of bed/sofa/TV structure, it's just a little much, even for a W establishment.

We did really like the spectacular rooms. Modern and spacious, they represent one of the strong points of this new Parisian hotel.

    Overview 9.25 /10

Facing the Opera Garnier, the W Paris-Opera has a spectacular location in a Haussmannian building dating from 1870. Although it has kept its high ceilings, don't expect to find anything but a contemporary style. Managed by Diego Gronda, W Hotels Worldwide proposes a contemporary hotel with a creative atmosphere. The theme of the design is centred around the concept 'The Spark', a fusion between the lights of Paris and the excitement of New York. Conceptual, the Spark can be seen in various areas of the hotel, from the reception and the lounge to the guest rooms and the bar. A wavy, digital, backlit wall which has practically become the signature of this hotel.

On the ground floor, the reception and the lounge area practically mirror each other. As for the decor, dark colours and stylish design for the former, and natural lighting, thanks to the bay windows, and more colourful shades for the latter.

We liked: that several artists contributed to the design of the hotel. Stencilled animals in the rooms, types of figurines that play hide-and-seek between the furniture and walls, fluorescent graffiti at the bottom of the staircase on the ground floor, etc. A word of advice: wait for nightfall to best enjoy the effect.

    Food and drink 8.80 /10

Here is something the hotel can really brag about, its signature restaurant, Arola. In the kitchen you will find Sergi Arola, a Spanish chef with a Michelin star. This student of Ferran Adria and Pierre Gagnaire opened several eponymous restaurants, including the Arola Gastro in Madrid and Barcelona, before jumping into this Parisian adventure. Indeed, we owe the 'Pica Pica' concept to him. The menu is not composed of your typical starter-main-dessert options, but rather a range of small portions. A concept that is fairly similar to Spanish tapas. However, it is a little more original.
Using seasonal products, these small culinary creations are divided into three themes: the garden at the table, by the sea, offerings of the land. There is no lack of ingredients to decorate the dishes and satisfy even the most demanding of palates.

W characteristics are also found at the bar. The W Lounge proposes various cocktails, as well as tapas and montaditos created by Chef Arola. If you are looking for originality, you will find it in the signature cocktail, an exclusive creation by Joseph Borosky, Cocktail Culture Director of W Hotels. The Spark is a sparkling mix of vodka, champagne, orange and raspberry. To be enjoyed very cold, all year round!

Don't miss: seeing the work of art by artist Shobo Shobo at the far end of the bar. The French Kiss, a surprising gilded cupboard.

    To know

Being a typical Parisian building, meaning it isn't overly large, you won't find a spa at the W Paris-Opera. However, guests of the W can use the Six Senses spa at the Westin, one of the most famous hotels in the capital.

Drawing on its brand name image, the W Opera offers all the services you would expect from a city hotel and more. A mix between a traditional concierge and a personal shopper, Cécile Rummler is the W INSIDER of the hotel. Hip to new trends and a connoisseur of all the current "in" places, her role is to advise guests who wish to discover the exclusive side of shopping in Paris.

The Bristol is one of the few luxury hotels in Paris that belongs to a European family (German) rather than one of the great families of Asia or the United Arab Emirates. Stylish, classy and refined, the Bristol holds great importance in the quality and authenticity of its features and materials. Its gourmet restaurant attracts a demanding clientele that is fond of excellent cuisine.

The George V is one of the most prestigious Parisian palaces in the city. You barely have to cross the threshold before realising you are entering a hotel in which luxury, perfection and indulgence are the name of the game. Boasting rooms fit for a princess, impressive lounges and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the George V ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying even the most demanding of guests. The interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon oversaw the complete refurbishment of the building in 1997, and has since then continued to make improvements to the decor in the 18th Century style.

The latest Parisian luxury hotel, the Shangri-La will seduce a demanding clientele that will know how to appreciate the richly ornate Empire style of this particular hotel. Nothing more can be said about the lengths taken to find the materials, designs, and other accessories that contribute to recreating the atmosphere of the 19th century, while at the same time offering the comfort and modernity of the 21st century. This extremely shiny and ornate Empire style may scare away some potential guests, however, it is still a real privilege to stay in this residence previously owned by a prince, the great nephew of Napoleon.

Listed as a historical monument and opposite the Opéra, the Intercontinental was opened in 1862 by Offenbach and is one of the most legendary luxury hotels Paris has to offer. Both the staff and the decor reach the kind of standards that will satisfy even the most demanding of guests. The only thing that could be seen as negative is the very formal nature of the welcome. If you do not like the French style of service, you are best off choosing elsewhere.
