    Location 1.0 /10

The hotel is in Kamari, one of the island's main tourist destinations, and certainly one that stays lively both day and night. It is next to the sea in an area where the main bars as well as many hotels are located. In order to reach the hotel, ask to be dropped off at the entrance of the pedestrian area. Bus routes pass through Kamari on their way to Fira, the capital, where the international airport is located.

    Accommodation 5.95 /10

The rooms are small and the decor is minimalist. The view from the makeshift balcony (it is too small for even a table) is at an angle, and you really have to twist your neck to take advantage of it. In any case, the road just in front does away with any aesthetic possibilities. The dimensions are also limited inside the room, although the master rooms are slightly bigger. This lack of space helps explain the location of the television (no remote control), which hangs from the ceiling and is too high up for anyone shorter than five and a half feet to be able to change the channel or turn down the volume. The hotel operates on an all inclusive basis, so room service is not available. The hotel's 69 rooms are also equipped with air conditioning and a safe (with a key).

Although the bathrooms are not as ridiculously tiny, they are only big enough for a shower cubicle and could really do with an overhaul. Don't expect to find hospitality products. All that is provided is a family-size liquid soap dispenser presiding over the sink. Overall, the place feels more like a well maintained guest house than a hotel.

    Overview 6.45 /10

There is nothing modern about the design of the hotel, but at the end of the day, the Makarios does meet the requirements of a varied range of guests looking for a reasonably priced holiday. On entering, you are welcomed into a medium-sized reception with a counter to the left and a reading area to the right. The inside of the complex opens onto a courtyard where the blocks of rooms are arranged in a circle and where deckchairs are set out for a lie down in the sun. At the centre is the hotel's single swimming pool, which also has a jacuzzi and access to the water for small children, who can also play in the outdoor mini-club. It has a real outdoor playground designed for children up to the age of 12.

The lack of spa facilities and the presence of a disused theatre give the place a somewhat abandoned feel that certainly does it no favours. In spite of this, the hotel does boast a 20-strong staff to help make your stay more enjoyable, although this did not extend to organised activities when we visited in 2009 (management had decided to set up an international activities team in 2010). The only Internet access is wired, and this is limited to a small room where the computers rub shoulders with a ping pong table and rather kitsch massage chairs (about £2).

    Food and drink 6.45 /10

The hotel has 2 bars (one in the common room with the television, the other next to the pool) and a restaurant. Once you have passed through the bar near the reception, which looks rather like a canteen, the restaurant is a fairly attractive alternative. It has seating for 180 diners at tables both inside and out, and offers a menu that does not really honour local or Greek specialities, but that caters well to the many Italian guests the hotel attracts. The restaurant is open for the 3 daily meals from 8:00am to 10:00am for breakfast, 1:30pm to 2:30pm for lunch, and from 7:30pm to 9:00pm for dinner.

    Beach

The hotel does not have a private beach, but guests have easy access to one of the beaches on the Kamari beach front, which is only a short walk away. Otherwise, you can head for one of the free beaches that are set further back.

    To know

The Makarios is a 3 star hotel that has aged over time (it opened in 1985), but it was renovated in 2000. Most of the guests are Italian, although French tourists are increasingly choosing this hotel too. The management was hoping to introduce organised international activities in 2010. The tourist season runs from 10th May until 10th October.

Formerly known as the Tropical, the Alesahne Beach was renamed when it was reopened for the 2009 summer season, having undergone a complete renovation to make it the trendy hotel it is today. Although it is pleasantly decorated, the facilities are not what you would expect from the category of hotel that it is trying to be. It does, however, offer a beautiful setting on Kamari beach..

The Sunshine is a small, unpretentious family hotel which offers a pleasant ambience and enjoys a fine location on the Kamari beach-front. It is certainly more suitable for those looking for a good pied-a-terre on the east coast of Santorini than those looking for particularly comfortable accommodation.

The Rivari opened its doors over twenty years ago and that's plain to see! The buildings are ageing and the furniture is in real need of replacing. This place is quiet though, and the staff is friendly. A ten minute walk takes you to the town of Kamari and its beach. The walk is not a pleasant one unfortunately as there is nothing to note in the surroundings... The clientele is mostly French.

Despite the fact that the Bellonias Villas lacks certain facilities that other hotels have, it does have a number of amenities which you will not find in the vast majority of hotels in Santorin, such as a small gym, a sauna, a hammam and a massage room, to name but a few. The hotel is charming and nicely decorated and occupies a pleasant location just opposite Kamari beach.

Open since 2001, the Zannos Melathron was the first hotel in Greece to be awarded the 'Relais & Chateaux' label. It isn't very big, but its service reflects very high standards. It is housed in an 18th century building which is totally enchanting, but mainly reserved for a wealthy clientele. Guests hardly leave the place at all, but benefit from its peace and quiet and admire the view over Santorini island.

The Homeric Poems hotel has gradually extended over the years. Since its opening in 2004, new rooms have been added without spoiling the surrounding area or the hotel itself. It only has 19 rooms, but it is perfect as it is, as much in its interior decoration and the warm welcome that it provides, as in the view that it affords over the caldera. It is a real haven for couples who are looking to relax and explore its romantic nooks and crannies, and, to be honest, this place was our favourite for the quality of its facilities and its suites with private swimming-pools!

The Santorini Grace is hard to find but nobody wants to leave once they're there! Everything about this little hotel on Santorini is enchanting. With its architecture, typical of the island, and its position hanging off the cliffside, opposite the caldera, it is a real haven of peace. The chef here is also worth a special mention as he prepares exquisite meals. We still remember them now! It is definitely one of our favourite hotels on the island and most of the guests here come from Britain.

Open since 2004, the Icons is a beautiful, harmoniously decorated hotel and wherever you are in it, the view of the caldera is unobstructed. However, you must not be scared of heights if you wish to get close to the cliff's edge! Attached to its neighbours on either side, the Icons stands out due to its cream-coloured walls. Its stairs are a little steep and its communal areas are not very spacious, but it is nonetheless a pleasant hotel whose clientele consists of couples only, and children under 14 are not allowed.
